什麼是片語(Phrase)?片語又稱為短語,在文法概念中,片語指完整句子中的片段。片語的總類很多種:名詞片語、形容詞片語、動詞片語、不定詞片語。想要像外國人一樣講一口道地的英語,那就要大量使用片語,下面列出幾組實用片語,大家可以將他活用在句子裡來代替某些單詞,會讓你的英文聽起來更為生動喔!
get the sack 被解聘
e.g.: The executive got the sack after being found involved with a case of bribery.
on the ropes 岌岌可危
e.g.: Paula's job has been on the ropes since she was found having something to do with the piracy.
between a rock and a hard place 進退維谷
e.g.: She will offend either her boss or her boyfriend after making the decision, so she's doing between a rock and a hard place.
alive and kicking 活蹦亂跳的
e.g.: Despite his great age, Ben is still alive and kicking.
up and down 身體(心情)時好時壞
e.g.: How's your mother? I'm afraid she's up and down.
fool around 閒蕩、游手好閒
e.g.: The workers always fool around when the supervisor steps out.
take pride in 以...為榮
e.g.: She took great pride in the success of her three children.
in vain 無效
e.g.: Their efforts were not in vain.
go bananas 發狂
e.g.: Stop teasing him he is going bananas.
bury the hatchet 和解
e.g.: Several generations later, at last the two families buried the hatchet.
lose one's head 驚慌失措
e.g.: Do not lose your head in an emergency.
head for 向...前進
e.g.: We are heading for the Big Apple-New York, USA.
not merely 不僅僅
e.g.: You are too ruthless, not merely to your part-timers.
shoulder to shoulder 同心協力
e.g.: Students walked shoulder to shoulder into the arena.
sooner or later 遲早
e.g.: Sooner or later, our "cute" children will leave us.
upside down 顛倒
e.g.: She turned the purse upside down, looking for a gold coin.
on tap 可隨時取用的
e.g.: Information on the Internet is on tap and free.
tell apart 辨別
e.g.: The bank teller cannot tell apart the counterfeit note and the real note.
in view of 鑒於
e.g.: In view of her health, we recommend that she live in the sanatorium.
be in vogue 流行
e.g.: What colors and textiles are in vogue this winter?
break loose 發作
e.g.: After he read the memo, his anger broke loose.
in season 旺季
e.g.: Buy some more pineapples; they are in season.
second to none 最出色的
e.g.: Second to one, we are number one.
twist someone's arm 說服、強迫
e.g.: Do not twist her arm to marry you. It will end up unhappy.
at will 隨心所欲
e.g.: You can come visit the kids at will anytime.
freeze out 排擠
e.g.: Convenience stores have frozen out traditional grocery stores.
be in full flow 滔滔不絕
e.g.: He is eloquent. He is always in full flow.
freshen up 梳洗
e.g.: Go freshen up and get ready for breakfast.
keep on the hop 忙碌
e.g.: I kept on the hop all day long.
be above board 公開的
e.g.: We are brokers; every deal has to be above board.
bump into 偶然遇見
e.g.: I bumped into my high school teacher in the library.
in a body 全體一起
e.g.: These salesmen decided to quit in a body.
boil over 失去控制
e.g.: We can see that the demonstration is going to boil over.
by crook 千方百計
e.g.: She bought our manor by the beach by crook.
over and above 另外
e.g.: Over and above the monthly salary, we will give you bonus.
by rights 照理說
e.g.: By rights, we have three days off every two weeks.
muddle through 僥倖過關
e.g.: We will not have financial crisis, we can just muddle through.
in name only 有名無實的
e.g.: Our relationship as father and son exists in name only.
ought to 應當
e.g.: I think the judge ought to reopen the case.
pair off 配對
e.g.: His parents intended to let him and his cousin pair off.
take pains to 努力
e.g.: I promise I will take pains to improve my English proficiency.
read into 誤解
e.g.: You read too much into his word; he did not mean to insult you at all.
there's no telling 無法知道
e.g.: There's no telling what will happen to this city in fifty years.
that is 換句話說
e.g.: His mouth will be sealed; that is, you can definitely trust him.
as blind as a bat 有眼無珠
e.g.: Frankly speaking, you are as blind as a bat.
after a fashion 勉強、多多少少
e.g.: The acrobat was educated after a fashion.
keep pace with 並駕齊驅
e.g.: We have to keep pace with the development of computer technology.
in a body 全體一起
e.g.: These salesmen decided to quit in a body.
the fat is in the fir 闖了禍、惹了麻煩
e.g.: You humiliated her in public. Now the fat is in the fire.
needless to say 用不著說
e.g.: Needless to say, she was bailed by her lawyer again.
